Control and measurement of electric dipole moments in levitated optomechanics

Levitated optomechanical systems are rapidly becoming leading tools for precision sensing, enabling a high level of control over the sensor's center mass motion, rotation and electric charge state. Higher-order multipole moments in distribution, however, remain major source backgrounds. By applying controlled precessive torques to dipole moment levitated microsphere vacuum, we demonstrate cancellation dipole-induced backgrounds by 2 orders magnitude. We measure ng-mass spheres determine their scaling with sphere size, finding that dominant arise from induced related dielectric-loss properties SiO$_2$ spheres. Control distribution sensors is key requirement sufficiently reduce background sources future applications.
